Rick Springer always liked art class as a kid but he really began his art exploration as a teen in Endicott, New York, tagging with Daniel Joseph. Dan was a major influence on his style and aesthetic. Rick left New York in 1993 and travelled the country with some close friends on and off for several years, refining and evolving his artist sensibility. After a stint in the Marine Corps, Rick moved to the town of Bolinas in 1997. Rick was impressed with an artistic stone wall, reckoned that stonemasonry must be a satisfying profession, and that was the spark that started him along the path he's on today.
Rick began his career in 1999 working for Doug Bryant, a successful Bolinas stonemason, for three years. Rick began working for himself for several years, briefly apprenticing under Merv Tompson, an accomplished architectural stonecarver. Rick was given an opportunity to work under George Gonzalez, the master stonemason who was a major artist on the wall Rick loved, for close to five years. Carving and designing on his off time, Rick refined his techniques further. Presently, Rick is self-employed in Bolinas, CA, and working in the field he loves. In 2012, Beau Vincent and her children took him in, and to this day, Rick is no longer a stray.
As of January 2020 Rick is happily busy raising his daughter with Beau and continues his designing and building.

BIO
I have spent the last 45 years as a student of ceramics. Inspired by Peter Voulkas, then Richard Shaw and Carl Dern, (all Bay area superstars), I decided to follow them. I loved the roughness and scale of Voulkas, the humor and mastery of Richard Shaw, and the tenderness in Carl Dern’s pieces. Other favorite artists who have influenced my imagination the most are Alexander Calder and Joan Miro.
My work began as the ceramics teacher of young boys in a residential treatment center in West Marin. I was discovering my skills along with my students for seven years. It was great training, inspiring work. My own work started years later with pieces I exhibited at the Claudia Chaplain gallery in Stinson Beach, followed by an exhibit in the Bolinas Museum and continued participation in their annual fund-raisers and Xmas Mini-Shows. I mostly love geometric shapes, mostly triangles, and mostly figures perched on triangular legs referencing gestures of attitude. To me a simple statement is satisfying.
I have continued to teach ceramics in the Bolinas School’s amazing Art Shop program since 1985. I have had great freedom to explore and assist children’s imaginations and consider myself fortunate to have spent so much time in the presence of their joyous wonder and experimentation. Images of my work over the last 30 years are available
to view at Solstice Gallery.
